Why so many old stone arches survive
A masonry arch carries its load almost entirely in compression, which is exactly what stone is good at.
As long as the line of thrust stays inside the middle third of the ring, the arch has no reason to move. Most failures come from scour at the foundations rather than from the arch itself.
The three arches in this note are all older than the roads that now lead to them.
